Five Things You Need to Know Before Going into Retirement

If you’re about to retire, congratulations! You’ve reached the stage of your life when you can finally kick back and enjoy your time with the ability to reflect back over your years and feel proud of what you’ve accomplished.

I’m always asking my grandparents why they get to go away on holiday so often and I don’t…their answer is always the same: ‘One day you’ll get your turn when you’re old enough to retire but for now, enjoy your youth.’ It’s sweet that they make out that a life of daytime television and holidays is such a terrible curse that comes with age. I know I should enjoy my youth but still…I can’t help but be a little bit jealous of the travels, right?

If you’re one of the lucky people who have saved up for years to pay for your new relaxed lifestyle with pensions and retirement annuity schemes etc., you may start looking in travel brochures and asking around for great places to visit, maybe even a place to retire abroad!

Here is a list, just to name a few…

1)    Malta

Malta is a beautiful place that is full of historical interest and stunning scenery. The weather is absolutely gorgeous, clocking up 3,100 hours of annual sunshine at an average temperature throughout the year of 19 degrees. Most people in Malta have English as their first language so it’s the perfect location for retired people wanting to stick to their own language abroad.

2)    Spain

It may sound like the obvious choice to retire to with your retirement annuity but Spain is a very popular choice with Brits for a reason. The crime rate is the lowest in Europe, the culture, food and entertainment is top notch and the weather is lovely (most of the time). There are locations to suit everyone – if you like relaxing with a margarita in the sunshine, visiting markets and bars then Marbella is the place for you. If culture, sight-seeing and fitness is your thing then Barcelona is right up your street (plus Nou Camp is there for any football fanatics – I’ve been and it’s amazing!)

3)    USA

Yes, the healthcare is much more expensive (so anyone with permanent conditions, beware) but the house pricing, culture, geographical diversity, friendly people and amazing food certainly make up for it. The USA is a popular destination with families and younger generations too because of shopping, theme parks (particularly Disneyland/world) and general entertainment facilities so your family will always jump at the chance to visit you.

4)    Australia

Australia is amazing because it is such a versatile country. There are so many different places to visit with people that come from all types of backgrounds. If you’re into music, you’ll love retiring to Sydney, where the bright lights and opera house are breath-taking. Australia has a wonderful wildlife, ranging from the small and fluffy to the huge and ferocious (but don’t let that put you off). You’ll just love the food and culture this country has to offer.
