Small Expenses to Keep in Mind for Owning Your First Car

| February 28, 2019

Everyone is excited about purchasing their first vehicle. The car represents a form of achievement, often the first large purchase of your life. It provides freedom, a sense of responsibility and a means of earning a living.

While contemplating which accessories to purchase for personalizing your new vehicle, remember there are some expenses that every owner faces and should not be forgotten.

Checking Fluids and Replacing When Necessary

Fluids should be checked on a regular basis and additional fluid should be added when indicators show that a fluid is low.

This is done for two reasons. First, it keeps the vehicle running in top condition. Second, chronic fluid loss indicates a problem that needs to be addressed before it becomes worse.

Fortunately, most replacement fluids are inexpensive, a few dollars a bottle. The following should be checked on a regular basis:

  • Engine Oil—check it at each fill up. The gas station will normally carry the right engine oil. Use the manufacturer’s recommended oil;
  • Antifreeze and coolant—check monthly and at the beginning of winter and summer. Low antifreeze/coolant can cause overheating and severe engine damage;
  • Power steering fluid—check monthly;
  • Transmission fluid—unlike other fluid checks, transmission fluid should be checked while the engine is warm and idling;
  • Check monthly—a sudden drop in fluid level could mean a leak in the system. Brake leaks need to be repaired as soon as possible.

Small Repairs Made Early Can Avoid More Expensive Repairs

It is almost always better to address a small repair in your vehicle to avoid a more expensive repair down the road.

For example, a small chip or crack in any of the vehicle’s glass should be repaired as soon as possible.

If not, there is a possibility that the crack can spread, causing the need for a new window or windshield.

Most auto glass repair services can accept insurance claims when applicable and perform repairs at your home or other location.

The repair is normally done in a day.

Worn tires present several problems if not replaced. A flat can leave you stranded.

If the tire blows, the shredded tire can damage wheel wells or the rear corner panel of your vehicle.

At worse, a blown tire can cause an accident. Check the tire by inserting a penny between the treads, with Lincoln’s head facing down.

If a portion of the head is covered, the tread is good. While doing this inspection, look for gouges on the side of a tire.

If a deep gouge exists, take it to a quality tire dealer for repair or replacement.

Following these suggestions can save money down the road. And the money saved allows you to buy the fun things that make your vehicle a statement of yourself.

Be proud of your new purchase and have a happy and safe driving experience.
