Ease Your Financial Pressure: Make a Little Extra on the Side

| November 29, 2013

ID-10085391People have been making extra money through ‘side-hustling’ for years, whether it’s through a second job pulling pints in the evenings or buying things cheaply at car boot sales and selling them on. There are plenty of ways to make a bit of extra cash on the side, and they’re not all dodgy ‘get rich quick’ schemes, you just need to play to your strengths and know where to look.

Use your strengths

If you want to make some extra cash, you’ll need to think about your strengths and weaknesses as a person. Are you outgoing and sociable? Do you have time to spare in the evenings? A job selling products door to door as an ‘Avon lady’ or being a party hostess for The Body Shop or Ann Summers may be up your street. If you’re more introverted or crafty, then you could make things to sell online or at craft markets. Similarly, if you have a different skill like being good at proof-reading or knowing a lot about a certain subject, then you could offer to edit work or tutor young people before exams.

Do something you love doing

The possibilities really are endless and as it’s for a little extra income, you can choose just how much time you want to spend doing it. You get to be in control of the money you earn and how you earn it. You never know, you may just find that you do so well with your side hustle that you get to give up your day job. After all, who doesn’t want to do something they love and are passionate about to earn a living?

Rent out additional space

There are even some ways to earn some extra money by putting in very little time or effort at all. For those who are not confident enough or who don’t have much in the way of transferable skills, there are still things which you can provide to others for a fee. Renting out spaces or things you own is a good way of raising a little money. If you own your home and you have a spare room or even just a spare corner or shed where people can store belongings, you could be sitting on a steady income. What’s more, you’re allowed to take over £4000 per year on rented space before you pay tax. If you’re uncomfortable with sharing your living space with someone 24/7, then perhaps consider part time renting to someone who needs to be in your town in the week and goes to their own home at weekends. Alternatively, you could rent out to students for short periods. This can be lucrative but you may be expected to provide food and drink as well as a bed.

Conclusion

Selling things that you don’t want any more can be another great way to make the most of things you aren’t using. Obviously the money you make on things like this is finite, whereas you can rent things out again and again. Once you’ve started selling successfully you could ‘get the bug’ and want to sell more and more, so ensure that you definitely want to get rid of things before you put them up for sale to avoid ‘seller remorse’!
