Energy Savings Solutions for Renters

Energy savings is an important issue to any household as it decreases the cost of utility bills, is a main component of living an eco-friendly lifestyle, and protects valuable resources. Homeowners are often advised to the many changes they can implement to minimize their energy usage, but renters may feel somewhat restricted as it is not solely up to their discretion to make major changes to a property which they do not own. That having been said, there are still a number of ways renters can go green and reduce their energy usage.

  1. Limiting Excessive Usage– One of the most accessible ways to begin saving energy is to be conscious of usage and follow guidelines from the United States Department of Energy. It can be tempting to crank up the heat during the winter months, but keeping the thermostat at a consistent 68 degrees Fahrenheit offers enough heat to be warm and comfortable. For those prone to a chill, adding an extra layer of clothing is easy and energy efficient. The U.S. Department of Energy also advises turning the thermostat down 10 degrees when out of the house, or in bed sleeping. This translates into a 10-15% savings on the energy bill! The summer time suggested thermostat setting is 78 degrees, and those who struggle with intense Texas summers can help cool the house by employing ceiling fans as well. Some homes have programmable thermostats which make following this schedule easy, but for renters with a traditional thermostat simply remembering to change the settings throughout the day allows for a first step in green living.
  2. Keeping Energy In– Sticking to a thermostat routine is great, but renters may find that these settings are not making the change they hoped for if the home is drafty or has many leaks. Sealing windows and doors with weather stripping is the type of simple project that a renter can take on. Some rental properties are older homes that do not have proper insulation, which can make a major difference. If this is the problem, reach out to the landlord with a plan. Foam insulation is one of the most popular, energy efficient options currently available. Research foam insulating companies in the area, get a quote, and discuss the benefits for the landlords. Renting out an insulated, energy efficient home makes it more attractive to potential tenants.
  3. Energy Efficient Appliances– LED light bulbs are promoted by most energy conscious groups due to their low energy usage, and decades-long lifespan. Replacing light bulbs is an easy, inexpensive project for a renter to tackle.  If the rental property requires the tenant to furnish appliances such as a refrigerator, washing machine, or clothes dryer look for Energy Star-rated appliances. These are the big three appliances in terms of energy usage, so this is the prime place to maximize energy savings. Some rental properties come equipped with these appliances. If the appliance needs replacing while the tenant is living there, once again offer to shop around for a great deal on an Energy Star appliance, and bring the findings to the landlord. Maintaining good relations with the landlord and showing an interest in keeping the property in the best condition will help get the landlord on board.
  4. Windows, Friend or Foe– Loads of energy efficient, insulated windows that allow natural light to flood the home during the day can be an energy savings, as it eliminates the need for electrical light. However, original windows in an old home can be a major energy cost as they provide no insulation from the elements, and can make homes colder in the winter and hotter in the summer. Approaching the landlord with an idea to replace the windows with new, insulated windows is the dream situation. Yet, this can be a costly undertaking that the landlord may not want to take on. Ask if the windows can be replaced gradually, starting with the biggest ones, or ones in a main living area. If the landlord will not agree to this project, purchasing thermal curtains is a helpful alternative. These can be found in a variety of sizes and styles from big box stores to home design chains. Due to the thickness of these insulating curtains they also serve as great room darkeners for sensitive sleepers.

It is clear that renters still have a multitude of energy savings options available to them while living in a rented space. The main thing to remember is to remain aware of energy usage and try to eliminate any waste.
